As the New Year is ushered in by revelers, people around the world vow to adopt healthier practices.

The 1-Pacman Party List looks forward to this fresh wave of resolutions for wellness among Filipinos and gets vital affirmation about its advocacy for sports and youth development.

“We push for wellness beyond New Year’s resolutions with a slate of actions, both already in progress as well as planned,” said sports, civic, and business leader Milka Romero, 1-Pacman Party List chairman and first nominee.

Initiated by 1-Pacman Rep. Mikee Romero, the law that mandated the creation of the Philippine Sports Training Center, Republic Act 11214, is now behind the shaping of the National Academy for Sports.

This law, which espouses sporting excellence through training, is among the 144 authored and co-sponsored laws of the 1-Pacman Party List under Romero, former Deputy Speaker of the House and 19th Congress chairman of the committee on poverty alleviation.

In the last quarter of this year leading up to the holidays, 1-Pacman continued with sports clinics and festivals and supported sports and youth programs in Cebu, Zambales, Zamboanga, Laguna, General Santos City, and Palawan.

Over 200 young volleyball enthusiasts were recently given hands-on training by top players of Capital 1 Solar Spikers in programs held in Cebu.

Merriment and gift-giving, also for senior citizens, followed these activities.

In Cebu, Milka, the younger Romero, also spoke to parents and senior citizens and acknowledged their important role in encouraging and supporting the special needs of athletes in their families.

“We salute you for the nurturing that you have provided for all our athletes to become who they are now, and where they are now,” she said.

The agreement to buy energy from reactors built by Kairos Power came just weeks after word that Three Mile Island, the site of America’s worst nuclear accident, will restart operations to provide energy to Microsoft.

But oil prices fell as markets were unimpressed with a pledge by China’s finance minister to boost the world’s second-biggest economy.

“As an athlete myself, I am grateful for all the proddings, all the encouragement, all the minute things, and deeds our parents have provided us –  from waking us up for early morning trainings, to packing our meals, to washing our soiled athletic wear, to squeezing in additional training with our family budgets,” she said.

“To all the ates, kuyas, siblings, who were always there to lend a hand – even in fetching or bringing to practices, or sometimes, rushing to the game sites – because your athlete sibling left at home the water jug or the shoes or uniforms needed for the games, we salute you all,” she specified.

It is the aim of 1-Pacman, through sports advocacy, to help the young athletes until they can venture on their own and strengthen their inner resolve to achieve improved self-confidence, Milka said.

She told the participating athletes, “Your stories will one day inspire the children out there, from all over our archipelago.”

Milka added that a healthy and fully engaged young population is a must for the Philippines and its sustained development.

Children and young people participating in healthy competition in sports not only develop lasting friendships but also their own social skills.

These are needed especially in these times when people tend to be sedentary, working on their laptops and engaging through mobile gadgets.

Thus, she said, all these New Year’s pledges and resolutions for better health habits are certainly positive and augur well for everyone.
